Catching up on my reading

I completed PPZ, but putting all of my thoughts on a post was difficult for me. I really enjoyed the silliness and the adaptation aspect.  I would recommend it to anyone that won't sit there and compare it to the original story.  If you do, you will hate these satires.

After that I tried Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters for the second time.  I just didn't like. it  I'm sorry.  It just didn't work for me.

I'm pretty sure the next book was The Hunger Games.  This book was a dark, post-apocalyptic story written for teenagers.  But as I read through the story I got the feeling that things just had to get better for these characters.  I loved the "love triangle" aspect.  It is not your ordinary love triangle.  Then, half way through the book I was trying to figure out the end (as I do with all books) but I couldn't figure it out.  Dumb I guess, but I couldn't.  I enjoyed the read, and couldn't put it down for the most part.

The Hunger Games is a trilogy.  Don't read the first book if you are not going to read all three.  The honest truth is that the third is not as good as the first two books.  The story takes a strange turn, but it completes the entire story.

I think filming has completed on the first movie, entitled The Hunger Games.  I can't wait to go see this movie.

PPZ Chapters one through sixteen

I started PPZ on the bus yesterday morning.  This is really a quick read.  The wording is not nearly as difficult as the original Pride and Prejudice. 

I think the biggest surprise in this books so far is the ninja training.  I knew there were zombies, hence the name, but ninja fighting?  This book is a true parody.  The story keeps to the original Jane Austen classic, but the author, Seth Grahame-Smith, works the parody in the story in a very fun way.  In this first part of the book you will discover that the entire cast of the original P&P appear, with an additional character or two that die at the zombies affront.

Mr Bingley arrives at Netherfield with his party of relations and friends.  They go to the ball where they meet Jane, Elizabeth, the three remaining sisters and their parents and the rest of the gentry in Meryton located in Herfordshire.  Mr Darcy makes the fateful comment about Elizabeth being "just tolerable" and not worth dancing with.  She lets him know she heard him.  Then zombies attack at the ball.  Elizabeth and her sisters now show us their ninja skills. 

You are introduced to the Bennet Sisters' life in Longbourne, their home just outside of Meryton, that may not always be theirs.  Mr and Mrs Bennet, Eliza's parents, are very similar to the characters in the original story.  There is much sarcasm, which shows Jane's whit. 

Miss Bennet (Jane) is invited to Netherfield, which pleases everyone, including her, because of her great like for Mr Bingley.  Miss Bingley and her sister, Mrs Hurst, show their true colors.  Jane becomes ill and has to stay for a few days.  Elizabeth goes to Netherfield to take care of her sister.  Elizabeth does not hide who she is, which disgusts Mr Bingley's two sisters.  Mr Darcy starts to realize how wrong he was about Elizabeth.

The sisters' cousin, Mr Collins, arrives for a visit, and a bride.  Mr Darcy's family is spoken of by a family friend, or foe, we don't know yet. 

At this point the story is picking up and you don't exactly know where it is going.  But what I love the most about Jane Austen's stories is that she wraps up all of her storylines.  So stay tuned.

 

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I've decided this will be my first book to review for this new blog. I've read all of Jane Austen's novels, Lady Susan, Love and Friendship and some of the Juvenila (sp).   So instead of rereading any of these right now, I'm going to make another attempt at reading PPZ. I love ALL of her novels, and listen to them on audiobook, but I'm not going to dedicate the time to reading these right now.

Reminder:  I only read on the subway. I can't guarantee how long it's going to take me to finish. I will try to comment about the book, on this blog, as often as possible.  Some people love these zombie stories and some hate them. I think I need to make up my mind for myself.

Just a quick note

Can I just tell you that my eyes are still burning, at almost 1:30 PM, from reading the end of Mockingjay on the subway this morning.  I know I let stories get to me, but this is ridiculous.  I can't wait to talk about these books and the amazing characters.  Please read The Hunger Games series.  I need more people to discuss it with.

Introduction to this blog

Hello.  My name is Kim and I'm creating this blog because I want to discuss some of the books I've read and am reading presently.  I'll also discuss the movies that were made for comparison.

I fell in love with reading because I saw the movie 'Sense and Sensibility' and decided to read the book.  Reading Jane Austen for the first time did it for me.  Before that, I was never interested in reading anything other than my decorating magazines.  After 'Sense and Sensibility' I had to consume all of Jane Austen's works.  I moved on to other Regency literature and other classics I know I should have already read by then.  Each one made me more and more happy I picked up this new habit.

I was never a person to pick up a book and read it.  Things have changed for me.  I decided that if I was going to ride the subway for one and a half hours to two hours a day, five days a week, I needed to do something other than stare at the other people on the subway car.  I almost never read at home, but there are some exceptions. 

I want to discuss books I've already read.  What I'm going to do it listen to them on audiobooks to refresh my memory and take notes.  I am going to start with Jane Austen, but move on to the Bronte sisters, JKR, Agatha Christie, MC Beaton and even some male authors.

I hope you will return to read the first post which I plan on posting soon.  Please leave any comment you like, especially if you don't agree with my opinions.
